Galactically Speaking – CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The still night air of Malyria completely failed to tousle Melora’s hair as she stood and stared at the dead pine in her backyard. The thing barely cast a shadow. It had been planted as part of a shrine when she and her original husband had moved in, but after she’d killed him the thing never got taken care of and it didn’t rain much on Malyria so the tree had died too. She wasn’t overly upset except for the undeniable complication of conducting a sacred burial in the middle of the night under the shadow of a tree that was basically a big tent pole ten years past any reasonable removal date. That son of hers was just too lazy to have done it. Poor Jason, she thought. It was… Jason, right? She honestly couldn’t remember anymore. It had been a long week since his disappearance. Bob had moved in. She’d had to buy new underwear. Everything was so complicated now. The miserable wedding planning wasn’t easy either. Most of her family was gone and with her newly dead son she didn’t have much in the way of ring-bearers. Given that they were traditionally the ones in charge of planning wedding ceremonies, the lack of them meant that she’d gotten stuck with the job. Bob, brilliant as he was, was no help in these matters and had just looked at her quizzically when she’d asked him which napkins he liked best. She’d immediately felt ashamed, knowing that a man like him couldn’t be bothered with silly questions about napkin preference. His brilliance had shone through since the very beginning- she knew that- but she was embarrassed that it had taken her so long to pick up on it. She held Jason’s vest- it was Jason, she was sure- and looked up at the moon. Full, and she was grateful for that at least. It was long past time to put this all to rest: she had to move on with life and Bob- saint though he may have been- wasn’t a very patient man. She heard the alarm go off in the house and Bob shout something unintelligible. Finally she could let this go. She dropped the vest into the hole she’d dug in anticipation of the event and kicked the adjacent mound of dirt back in. “For my poor…J-..son.” Flooded with closure she walked back into the house to make Bob a sandwich and some macaroni. He was very regimented about his meals.
